MHC Under 12 Tour 2012 – Final Notice

Cork 18-19 February 2012 : Well done to the u14s who travelled to Cork last weekend and played Cork C of I in Garryduff on Saturday and Fermoy early on Sunday morning.  The girls and travelling supervisors had a great weekend and were delighted with the results! Many thanks to Jill for her superb organisation!!

Sligo 2012

Irish Hockey will be hosting a mens Olympic Qualifying Tournament from 10th to 18th March in UCD.  It would be extremely worthwhile taking some time out to go along and support the Irish men at this event.

For the more adventurous… the Irish ladies (including U12 coach Shirley McCay) will be competing for a place in London 2012 from 17th to 25th March in Antwerp, Belgium.

Membership Applications for 2012/13

We have reviewed the application process for membership of the club and have decided that for 2012/13 season

• existing members will be asked to renew by the end of March 2011
• sisters/daughters/grand-daughters of existing members will be asked to apply for membership by the end of March
• Applications from new members will be accepted after Easter
  • the application process and form will be posted on this website after Easter

Next Sunday, 29th January,  the U16A team play Corinthians in the Semi-Finals of the Jacqui Potter Cup at 13:30 in Muckross School… Please come along and support the girls

We are also pleased to be welcoming two teams up from Carlow to play our U14 Diamond and Sapphire squads.  Those matches are at 11am and 12pm in The Teresians.  Players are asked to provide a light lunch for Carlow and parents are asked to help with the setup and serving!

All remaining players will have training as normal with a slight change to the training times for the U16B and U16C squads – they will train from 1100 to 1230

There are matches for most teams the weekend of 5th February – pls keep an eye on your teamer messages and the website

Please note that Hockey training starts back on Sunday 8th January for all groups…

Matches

The first matches will take place on 22nd January — please keep an eye on those teamer messages to advise you of the important details: meeting time, match time and match venue!

The U16s have reached the semi-finals of the Jacqui Potter Cup and will play Corinthians on 29th January at 1330 in Muckross School… supporters are very welcome!

Under 12s : Sligo Trip 2012

We are currently planning a trip to Sligo for our Under 12 group in February (24th to 26th).  The numbers that we can manage on the trip depend on the number of available coaches/managers/parents who are prepared to travel in a supervisory capacity.  A form has been emailed out to all U12s and girls are asked to register  by Sunday 15th January.   MHC Under 12 Tour 2012 Application Form

Players who travel to Sligo are also expected to be available to host Yeats HC on morning of 11th March (provide refreshments!).

Well done to all teams on their recent games and matches in November and on 4^th December.  The results in the leagues were very good overall. 

Special congratulations to the U16 Jacqui Potter Squad who won their match against a strong and resilient Pembroke team.  The girls will face Genesis in the Quarter Finals on 11^th December.  The match is scheduled to take place at 2pm in UCD on the back pitch… supporters are as ever very welcome. 

The last training session before Christmas  for all squads will be on Sunday 11^th December at the normal training times.

A general information meeting is also scheduled for Parents at 1030 on Sunday 11^th December.  – unfortunately it has to be held outdoors – so it will be a bit weather dependent!

Best of luck to Shirley McCay and Lizzie Colvin (U12 coaches) who are spending the weeks before Christmas in Argentina playing two tournaments as part of the Irish team preparation for the Olympic Qualifiers.

14 Nov Update
Well done to all teams on great results yesterday… U16 Diamonds drew their match and all the other teams won

Next Sunday all teams will be invited to stay and support the cup match at 11am and take part in the club fundraiser (raffle and goody bags).

There is no hockey on 30th October… enjoy the break and hope you fill your bags with goodies on the 31st!

Congratulations to Leinster U16 Girls on their success last weekend – Leinster beat Ulster in the final pool game to win the Inter-Provincial title.

Philippa Cotter has been selected on the Leinster U16s to play in Belfast on the weekend 22nd/23rd October.  The very best of luck to Philippa and the rest of her team mates…  Philippa joins a growing list of recent Muckross Colts to have been selected on Leinster U16 & U18 teams and panels.

Leagues & Fixtures

League matches at U14 & U16 level get underway this month.  All fixtures are listed on the Leinster Hockey Website and in general matches are played on the dates specified.  Results will be updated periodically

• Three U16 teams play Pembroke in League matches
• One U10 team invited to take part in the Leinster Festival.  There will be further festivals held throughout the season and different players will be brought along to each festival

16th October

• Special guest coach, Dave Passmore (Irish High Performance Director) to put our U8/10/12 coaches and players through their paces!!
• Three U14 teams play Pembroke in their 1st league matches

23rd October

• U8s play away in Mt Anville from 0930 to 1030
• U10s play away in Mt Anville from 0900 to 1030
• U12s play away in Mt Anville from 1100 to 1230
• Training times for U14s & U16s will be adjusted to make full use of pitch availability

Hockey camps are a great way to improve your skills… If you think about it – a 20hr camp is practically the same as a full season of coaching… 

THE BUZZ HOCKEY ACADEMY

Run by Gordon Watkins and Graham Shaw.  Graham is one of the most capped Irish Internationals (151) and is player/coach in Glenanne HC, Head Coach in Loreto HC and Head Coach in Rathdown School.  Gordon is a former Irish International and has coached Muckross, Hermes and Trinity. 

• Camps are running in Rathdown School from 1st to 3rd November
• Ages 8-11 from 10am to 1230pm. Cost €50 per player
• Ages 12-16 from 10am to 2pm. Cost is €70 per player

All squads will return to training on Sunday 4th September.

This season the main venue for the Junior/Colts section will be Muckross Park College.  The Teresian School will continue to be a venue for matches and supplementary training.

Training groups continue to be arranged according to current school year:

0930 to 1030 for  1st to 4th class

0930 to 1100 for 5th and 6th class *

1030 to 1200 for 1st and 2nd years **

1200 to 1330 for 3rd and 4th years **

* Supplementary mid-week training for 5th and 6th class will be arranged shortly – preference will be given to girls in 6th class.

** Selection for league and cup teams applies within the 1st/2nd year group and within the 3rd/4th year group. Trials begin on 4th Sep

Uniform & Equipment

All players must wear shinguards and gumshields when taking part in training and matches.

Please support a stick swap initiative on the 1st day of training.  As our players are still growing there is a need to replace sticks on a regular basis.  Donations of old sticks (in reasonable quality) will be accepted for onward sale (nominal €10) to club members.  Unsold sticks will be donated to charity. 

Please support our uniform supplier, ED Sports.  Ed will be selling uniform items at training from 1030 to 1200 on Sunday 4th September.  For new sticks, astro-runners etc please visit Ed’s shop, located in Pembroke Hockey Club, Serpentine Avenue, Dublin 4.  The shop opens from 3pm to 7pm daily and from 930am to 430pm on Saturdays and from 10am to 1pm on Sundays.

Players are expected to wear training and match uniforms each week

1st to 6th class players uniform consists of a white crested poloshirt, a white hoody, a green crested tracksuit

In the 5th/6th class group the players may also opt for the green skort and crested socks which they will carry through to the senior club.

From 1st to 4th year in addition to the green crested tracksuit and hoody, the players are expected to wear a white crested poloshirt, a green TK skort and crested playing socks.  Players are specifically requested not to wear items of their school uniforms, even if they are a similar colour.

Please come out to support the Irish Ladies team – they are taking on team USA in the 1/4 finals of the Champions Challenge on Thursday 23rd June and need all your support.  The team have been playing superb hockey and include one of our u12 coaches – Shirley McCay.

On Sunday Muckross will be providing ball patrol for the Finals and the 3rd/4th place play offs.

The Deirdre Ennis Shield competition took place on Sunday 10^th April 2011 in glorious sunshine.  16 teams representing twelve clubs competed for the Shield. The Muckross Tigers were the eventual 3-1 winners against Mount Anville HC. 

The following clubs took part in the event in 2010 – Avoca, Bray, Corinthians, Genesis, Loreto, Malahide, Mount Anville, Muckross, North Wicklow, Railway, Pembroke and Yeats (travelling all the way from Sligo!).

Teams were divided into 4 sections and a series of round robin games were played to determine quarter final places. 

In the top half of the draw the Muckross Tigers beat Genesis to set up a very close semi-final against Pembroke who had beaten North Wicklow.   In the other half of the draw Mount Anville Tigers put paid to Bray to secure a semi-final place.  Meanwhile Railway Tigers and Corinthians had a very even quarter final game.  With no result at fulltime the teams battled out for the last semi-final slot with a hockey skills elay race in which Corinthians were first past the post to meet Mount Anville.  

There was very little between Pembroke and Muckross in the 1^st semi-final. Muckross played the ball well around the pitch and set up their goal with some nice moves between forwards and midfield. 

The 2^nd semi-final game between Corinthians and Mt Anville was also very close.  Corinthians had edged a win in the earlier pool match, but in the semi-final it was all square at fulltime – requiring another hockey skills relay race to decide places for the final which Mount Anville won.

The final was a very competitive game and a real demonstration of skills and technique that many of the seniors looking on were amazed at!  Quick frees and auto-passing seems to be 2^nd nature at this level.  Reverse hit strikes and 3D skills were well in evidence.  At  half-time despite tremendous pressure from Muckross the score remained 0-0.  Muckross came out fully switched on in the 2^nd half and knocked their 1^st goal in within 30 seconds.   This was quickly followed by an excellent volley shot to give a 2 goal buffer.   Mount Anville fought back hard and had a number of excellent solo runs before being cut off by a solid Muckross defence.   A 3^rd goal from Muckross 3 minutes before the end seemed to seal the game… but again Mount Anville fought back hard and another excellent solo saw them slot home a goal from play.   Unfortunately though time was against them and when the hooter went it was Muckross who held up the Shield for the first time since 2004!
